When to visit Mozirje: seasons in the Upper Savinja Valley
There is no wrong time to come to Mozirje, but each season feels very different. Here is our honest guide to the year in the Upper Savinja Valley, written from the creekside at House K, with tips on what to pack.
Spring (April to June): flowers and waterfalls
Spring is when Mozirje wakes up. Mozirski gaj, the town's famous flower park, usually opens for the season in mid-April, and the spring bulbs are a highlight. The meadows turn green, the orchards blossom and the rivers run full with snowmelt from the mountains. This is the best time to see the Rinka waterfall in Logar Valley at its most powerful.

Days are mild and good for walking, although the weather can change quickly and higher trails may still have snow into May. Expect some rainy days and pack accordingly.
Summer (July and August): long days outdoors
Summer is the busiest and most lively season. Long, warm days are perfect for hiking on Golte, exploring Logar Valley, cycling along the valley and spending time by the water. The Savinja is cool and clear, and riverside spots are lovely for a picnic. Seasonal water and adventure activities around Camp Menina and along the river are usually running in summer; check current offers before you go.
Afternoon thunderstorms are common in the mountains in summer, so start hikes early. Popular places like Logar Valley can be busy at weekends. Staying at House K in Mozirje means you can go early and come back to a quiet house by the creek.
Autumn (September to October): golden colours and calm
Many locals would say autumn is the most beautiful time of year here. The forests turn gold and red, the light is soft, and trails are quieter after the summer holidays. September is often settled and pleasant for hiking, and Mozirski gaj usually stays open until mid-October with its autumn displays. It is also harvest time on the farms, with apples, pumpkins and home-made treats.
Mornings can be misty and cool in the valley, with sunshine higher up on Golte. It is a wonderful season for slow days, good food and long walks.
Winter (November to March): snow and cosy evenings
In winter, Golte becomes a small, family-friendly ski area above Mozirje, with skiing and winter walks when there is enough snow. Logar Valley under snow is magical for winter walks, and the valley is very peaceful. In the run-up to Christmas, Mozirski gaj is often decorated with festive lights.

Snow conditions vary from year to year, so check the ski area's current status before you travel. Winter tyres and chains are a sensible idea for mountain roads. After a cold day outside, the warm, cosy living room at House K is exactly where you will want to be.
What to pack for a creekside stay
- Layers: valley mornings and evenings are cooler than you might expect, even in summer, especially right by the water.
- A rain jacket: useful in every season in the mountains.
- Good walking shoes: for riverside paths, Golte and Logar Valley. Hiking boots if you plan real mountain trails.
- Sandals or water shoes in summer, for paddling at the gravel banks of the Savinja.
- Insect repellent for summer evenings by the creek.
- Warm clothes and winter gear from November to March, plus snow chains if you plan to drive up to Golte.
- A fly rod if you fish. The season on the Savinja runs from spring to late autumn; see fishing near Mozirje.
The house has a fully equipped kitchen, so you do not need to bring much for cooking. A cool bag is handy for picking up local cheese, honey and produce on your trips.
So, when should you come?
For flowers and waterfalls, come in spring. For hiking, swimming and long days, summer. For colours and calm, autumn. For snow and cosy nights, winter.
