Best day trips from Creekside House K

One of the best things about staying at Creekside House K in Mozirje is how much you can see in a day and still be back by the creek in time for dinner. The Upper Savinja Valley leads straight up into the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, and the historic town of Celje is in the other direction. These are the trips our guests enjoy most.

Logar Valley and the Rinka waterfall

If you only do one day trip, make it Logar Valley (Logarska dolina). Follow the Savinja upstream through Ljubno and Luče, and the valley narrows until you reach this wide, green glacial valley surrounded by steep limestone peaks. The drive from Mozirje takes well under an hour.

Inside the valley you can walk or cycle along the valley floor (e-bikes and regular bikes can be rented at TIC Mozirje; see bike and e-bike rental in Mozirje), past meadows, forest and old farms. At the far end, a short, signposted walk from the road leads to the Rinka waterfall, where the young Savinja drops over a high rock wall. It is especially impressive in spring, when snowmelt fills it. Good shoes are enough for the main path. Logar Valley is a protected landscape park, and in the main season a fee is usually charged for cars entering the valley, so keep some change or a card handy.

Tip: arrive in the morning, walk to the waterfall before the busiest part of the day, then have a late lunch at one of the farms or inns in the valley.

The Solčava panoramic road

Above Logar Valley, the Solčava panoramic road (Solčavska panoramska cesta) winds along the hillside past remote mountain farms and viewpoints over Logar Valley, Robanov kot and the surrounding peaks. It is a narrow mountain road, so take it slowly and allow time to stop. It pairs perfectly with Logar Valley: drive up the valley in the morning and return over the panoramic road in the afternoon light. Many of the farms along the way welcome visitors, and the village of Solčava itself is worth a short stop.

The road is best from late spring to autumn. In winter, check conditions first, and do not rely on it after snowfall.

Celje: castle and old town

For a change from mountains, drive down the valley to Celje, one of Slovenia's oldest towns. The Old Castle of Celje (Stari grad Celje) stands on a hill above the town, with walls and towers you can explore and wide views over the Savinja. Down in the old town you will find squares, cafés and museums connected to the Counts of Celje. It is an easy half-day or day trip and a good plan for a cloudy day.

On the way, the Lower Savinja Valley around Žalec is hop country, and you will see the tall hop gardens along the road in summer.

Shorter drives nearby

Not every day needs a big outing. These shorter trips work well for a half day:

  • Golte: the mountain plateau above Mozirje, for hiking and views in summer and skiing in winter. See our guide to things to do in Mozirje.
  • Nazarje: the neighbouring town, with Vrbovec manor and its forestry and timber museum, and the Franciscan monastery on the hill above town.
  • Gornji Grad: home to one of the largest churches in Slovenia, set in a quiet valley along the Dreta river.
  • Luče and Ljubno ob Savinji: villages along the upper Savinja, with river views, walks and traditional architecture. From Luče, the Snow Cave (Snežna jama) on Raduha is a summer outing for more adventurous guests; check its current visiting times first.
  • Velenje: the lake and the castle museum above the town make an easy afternoon.

Practical tips for day trips

  • A car makes it easy. Public transport in the upper valley is limited, especially at weekends.
  • Mountain weather changes quickly. Pack a rain jacket and a warm layer, even on sunny days.
  • Start early in July and August. Logar Valley is popular on summer weekends.
  • Check opening times on the day. Museums, caves and farm restaurants often have seasonal hours.

Come back to the creek

After a day in the mountains, it is lovely to come back to a quiet house by the water, cook in a fully equipped kitchen and relax in the living room.
